The increase in the elderly population is a relatively new phenomenon that began during the second half of the 20th century, first in developed countries and more recently also in developing countries. It is based on two facts: the reduction in the birth rate and advances in medical science that have significantly increased life expectancy. However, this aging process occurs at different rates in some regions than in others, which means that many countries are ill-prepared for the new realities. Latin America has been characterized by a rapid demographic transition, compared to other continents such as Europe, which has caused it to go from high levels of mortality and fertility in the 1950s to low levels in both demographic variables today. The Research Group on Government, Administration and Public Policies (GIGAPP), whose main objective is to contribute to the debate and the generation of new concepts, approaches and analytical frameworks in the areas of government, management and public policies, promoting the creation of spaces for permanent exchange and collaboration, and facilitating the construction of networks and joint projects, was aware of the importance that the topic of aging would have for countries and from the beginning promoted and supported the topic through special issues of its journal (in 2020 and 2022) and a working group at its latest conferences. This issue has taken a further step, being an example of collaboration, by incorporating articles presented at the II International Congress on Longevity GEGOP held in Viçosa (Brazil) on September 4-6 under the title “Innovation and Policies for Healthy Aging”, at Working Group 24 on “Longevity Policies for Aging in Two Continents” of the XII International Congress on Government, Administration and Public Policies held in Madrid (Spain) on September 23-25 and at the II International Congress on Public Policies on Longevity held in Valencia (Spain) which was to have been held on November 6-7 and which due to the flooding of the Dana in municipalities of the province of Valencia, with a significant number of deaths and material damage, had to be held on January 20 and 21 in online format. The papers presented at these three conferences do not allow for the incorporation of research on the topic currently being conducted in various countries in both Latin America and Europe, thereby providing a better understanding of the problems these countries face and the solutions they propose.
