The role of community media during the June 2022 protests in Ecuador
Abstract
Faced with the loss of purchasing power and the deterioration of the living conditions of Ecuadorians but, especially, of the most vulnerable, in June 2022, the country was shaken by an indefinite strike and protests led by the indigenous sector. The representation of the protest differed notably, in the coverage carried out by the traditional and community media. The research work that we present below analyzes through five interviews with community media communicators, the type of coverage developed by these media, their places of enunciation, ways of working and editorial lines. The objective is to get closer to the third sector of communication, which constitutes a fundamental piece in the fight to maintain a minimum plurality and truthful information in the coverage of events such as social protest, especially when it comes from the leadership of the indigenous sector. The results shed more light on the dynamics of the work of the community media, its diametrical difference with the editorial lines of the traditional media and its checkered relationship with the State. In fact, despite the legal recognition that community media have, their work is continually hampered by State institutions that place them at the same level as those who protest.
